Friedberg states Chinese scientific publications went from half of US levels in 2015 to 50% more than US now.

Friedberg observes that research discoveries may take forty years before their industrial impact becomes apparent.
“And I think just this broad question or observation that sometimes inquisitive minds leads to research that leads to some set of discoveries that are completely not apparent until forty years later, the effect or the impact it may have had Yeah. On building an industrial field.”
Friedberg describes Chinese researchers who engineered stem cells to produce excess mitochondria for therapeutic use.
“So what these guys did, which was really incredible, is they took stem cells. So stem cells that they got out of human blood and they took those stem cells and they figured out a way to treat the stem cells so that those stem cells would start to make an excess amount of mitochondria than they normally would make.”
Friedberg cites 2021 Chinese research demonstrating a chemo-enzymatic system for synthesizing starch from its component molecules amylose and amylopectin.
“At the end of twenty twenty one, there was a paper published by a team in China where they demonstrated a chemo enzymatic system for synthesizing starch. Starch is amylose and amylopectin, two molecules.”
