Gurley says Michael Dell acknowledged that Gurley's ROIC analysis revealed insights Dell didn't know about their own business.
“Michael kindly tweeted about my book the other day and said he taught us some things we didn't know ourselves about our business.”
Gurley notes the professor analyzing Uber admitted he had never used the product, only taxis.
“Not only that. In in the in the report of his, which a summary version got public, but I found the background version, he admits that he had never ridden Uber and only taken taxis.”
Gurley used return on invested capital analysis showing Dell had 10 to 1 advantage over Compaq.

Gurley says analysts miss NVIDIA's ecosystem thinking and multi-year planning beyond current architecture.
“I think analysts always focus on the current architectural bet. But I think one of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that we're thinking about the entire ecosystem and many years out.”
